Johnny Tinder, a former local journalist, has set himself up as a private investigator. However, before he starts his new career, he perhaps unwisely decides to track down his old flame, Catherine, ten years after they had split—someone whom he still regards as the 'love of his life'.

Johnny, though, must negotiate his way through several obstacles, including his eye for other women. He can’t help himself and is the first to admit his frailties as he succumbs to the sexual advances of the promiscuous DI Sue Grendel, and even that of his stalker, Agnieszka, a heavily tattooed Polish woman he met on a train whilst travelling back from Cornwall.

He’d been in the west country visiting Catherine’s old aunt, Ursula, in the hope of finding his lost love. Whilst there, he finds himself in a tryst with two scheming barmaids who had both fallen for his good looks. Johnny was now once again at odds with himself and was wondering if he still loved Catherine after all.

Ursula could not provide Johnny with any clues about the whereabouts of her beloved niece and remains sceptical about Johnny’s intentions, but does confide that she had also lost contact, urging him to do his best to find her.

As the months tick by, Johnny believes he is close to finding Catherine, but fears she will rebuke him as soon as he attempts to walk back into her life. In a harrowing twist, he stumbles upon a scenario much, much worse than that!
